OUR HISTORY
First African Methodist Episcopal Church was established on February 22, 1959. The Old Avery Chapel church building formerly located at 205 N. Geary Street was the sacred ground on which First AME was organized. The Reverend Eugene E. McAshan our first pastor and Presiding Elder F.J. Straughther held the first worship services. When the invitation was extended, sixty eight adults and fourteen children joined. On the first Sunday in August 1959, First AME moved to their newly purchased building at 2307 N. Glen Ellyn Place in Oklahoma City. The building, after being remodeled and furnished was dedicated in a dedication ceremony, October 1959, by the presiding Bishop of the 12th District, O.L. Sherman. The church had a mortgage burning ceremony on August 6, 1973. The Rev. Alfred L. Williams was the pastor at that time.
In the years after that, the church bought some property at 3309 N. Kelly Ave. and had the groundbreaking ceremony on April 23, 1983. The Rev. Charles T. Carrington was the pastor at this time. The new church was built and at the end of a week of dedication services, Sunday June 23, 1985, the new church was officially dedicated. Presiding at the dedication was Bishop H. Hartford Brookins and our own Rev. C.T. Carrington.
The church still stands at 3309 N. Kelly Ave., Oklahoma City, OK.
To God be the Glory for bringing First AME Church through over 50 blessed years of service to the Lord. We look forward with anticipation to the years to come.
